Yesterday the BBC reported that “The Jodrell Bank Observatory, which has housed the UK's largest telescope for nearly 70 years, has lost its funding and could now close”.

It added that the “funding body, the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) agency, said it had to focus investment on projects that deliver ‘the greatest long-term impact’.”

The UKRI is a quango I write about a lot. It has a huge budget - £8.8 billion for 2025/26 - which it distributes through its nine research councils, as well as other channels such as the Future Leaders Fellowships (UKRI FLF).

The issue is that, while the UKRI does fund sensible things, it pours far too much money into its more frivolous wings, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), which awarded £841,830 and £668,244 to research projects The Europe that Gay Porn Built, 1945-2000 and Pregnant Men: An International Exploration of Trans Male Experiences and Practices of Reproduction, respectively.

The UKRI FLF isn’t good either - though it doesn’t count as a research council - as you will soon see. It’s another example of money being wasted.

Meanwhile the UKRI has decided the Observatory’s £2.8 million annual budget is too much. But wait until you see today’s examples of what the UKRI chucks money at, including studies that have nothing to do with the UK.

Southwark Council funded a “Queer Ecology” event, I can reveal to readers.

Taking place last Friday, the “ecology walk and improvisation-based movement session” offered LGBTQI+ people the chance to “pause with plants and local wildlife, uncovering the queer histories embedded in ecologies around us.”

“Whilst we practise sensing, feeling and moving as and with these queerly fugitive plant bodies, we will also consider what we might offer in return”, reads the description for Queer Ecology: noticing, feeling, moving, which was hosted by the The Siobhan Davies Dance Company.

It generously welcomed “those with intersectional and emerging queer life experiences which may situate them against normative expectations (whether this is through racialisation, disability, class and more).”

The Siobhan Davies Dance Company - which put on four Pride events in total, including a “Queer Takeover” - was one of 15 recipients of Southwark’s Pride fund 2026, which saw £30,000 split between each winner.

Other taxpayer-funded events included:

• A Pride celebration creative workshop at Art Block for local children at the South London Gallery;

• Queer Minds Trans Care Day, hosted by South East London Mind; and

• Queer Speech Karaoke for young people and families and a later 18+ version for older groups, hosted by This is Arcade CIC.

Meanwhile Southwark Council recently announced it has a funding gap of around £100 MILLION:

Is it any wonder when it’s spending money on the exploration of “queerly fugitive plant bodies”?!

Over the last couple of weeks, Southwark Council has been introducing people to its Executive Members on Instagram - and it ain’t pretty.

In the last local elections, Southwark ended up with no party majority and is now run by 29 Labour councillors, 22 Greens and 12 Liberal Democrats, with the council being led by a Green.

What’s interesting is the increasingly ridiculous titles councillors are now given, including the “Executive Member for Inclusive Economy, Equalities and Democracy” and “Executive Member for Council Co-ordination and Climate”.

Then we get to the biographies of these people, who list Palestine activism, going to raves and supporting the Latin American community as interests (what happened to representing England and the UK?! Ya know, the country we live in???).

According to Southwark’s website, councillors get an allowance of £15,060, with those who take on extra roles entitled to a “Special Responsibility Allowance”, which can be anything from “£3,453 for roles including deputy leader of the opposition, to £62,365 which is paid to the Leader of the Council.” There are 63 councillors in total.

Anyway, here’s the fabulous team! (I’ve singled out the most striking examples but you can find the full list here and here). Genuinely, I didn’t know which party each councillor represented when I chose my examples from Instagram, but surprise surprise, the nutty ones are mostly Green!

Earlier this month Angela Rayner delivered the keynote speech at the 40th anniversary of the New Economics Foundation, where she “spoke about the power of devolution.” In a tweet, she wrote “After forty years, NEF’s mission may be unfinished. But it is more vital than ever.”

Another MP to attend was Miatta Fahnbulleh, who is being talked about as the economic mastermind behind Andy Burnham and was once the Chief Executive of the NEF. Fahnbulleh posted that it was “Fantastic to celebrate 40 years of NEF and its huge contribution to economic thinking & progressive ideas.”

It’s pretty obvious from these endorsements alone that the NEF is a big player in left-wing circles, but there’s also ample proof on its website. For instance, one of the think tank’s missions is a “fast and fair transition to a green economy through a deep and equitable transformation to address the climate crisis” and in a post titled “Share the wealth”, it has written about why “richest few are taking too much”. Its website is littered with more ideological nonsense.

With that being said, I wonder why taxpayers are expected to fund the NEF year by year? (which received £379,500 from taxpayers between 2021-25). Especially when (as I will show in this article), right-wing think tanks do not get the same government income.

Today it’s been announced that the Government will tax interest on cash held in stocks and shares ISAs.

Meanwhile it continues to haemorrhage money on the charity sector.

Case in point: I have calculated the Government spending on just 28 asylum and migration charities over the last five tax years, and the total comes to

£701,156,359!

Bear in mind there are over 170,000 charities registered on the Charity Commission for England and Wales, alone, so the figure could get much, much higher.

The bill for refugees, asylum seekers and/ or “people seeking sanctuary” (as the Left is now trying to rename them) gets higher every day. On my own Substack I have calculated over £700 million in taxpayer funding going towards asylum and migration charities across the last five years. There are, of course, the bills for migrant hotels too.

What people may be more surprised to know is that universities are being awarded huge sums for research about asylum seekers/ otherwise. Numerous abstracts are packed with ideologically loaded statements - “the hostile environment”, “postcolonial sexual identity” - presented as neutral and factual, showing you exactly what stance so-called academics are likely to take (a leftist one, as well as being complete gobbledygook). To show you what I mean, I’ve compiled 10 examples below - two have finished and the rest are all underway. The total for these is £9,810,244.

The Wellcome Trust, which received £105,998,100 from taxpayers between 2020–24, has launched awards for “researchers of Black, Bangladeshi and Pakistani heritage in the UK”, I can reveal.

Information about the Wellcome Accelerator scheme, explains: “Researchers of Black, Bangladeshi and Pakistani heritage in the UK are currently underrepresented in research funding and experience higher rates of career attrition. The Accelerator Awards provide flexible funding for research or research-adjacent activities such as training, secondments, and networking.”

Successful applicants have their salary paid for and can receive up to £200,000 for project expenses over two years. Expenses include “animals” (“You can ask for funds to buy animals if they are essential to your project”), travel and subsistence, overseas allowances and inflation allowance.

To apply you must self-identify as the following (more criteria can be found on the Wellcome website):

• Black heritage background, including a mixed heritage background. For example, Black African; Black Caribbean; Black Other; Mixed background (must include Black African, Black Caribbean or other Black backgrounds).

• Bangladeshi heritage background, including a mixed heritage background. For example, Bangladeshi Other; Mixed background (must include Bangladeshi backgrounds).

• Pakistani heritage background, including a mixed heritage background. For example, Pakistani Other; Mixed background (must include Pakistani backgrounds).

Any nationality is eligible.

You cannot apply for the scheme if “you do not self-identify as belonging to one of the heritage backgrounds outlined in the ‘Who can apply’ section above.”

After years studying taxpayer-funded grants, I strongly believe any future right-wing (or common sense) government would do best to cut two bodies first: the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

These two research councils are subsidiaries of the UK Research and Innovation, a non-departmental body of the Government, which dishes out £8 billion of taxpayers’ money each year.

Respectively, AHRC and ESRC have awarded £841,830 and £668,244 to the studies The Europe that Gay Porn Built, 1945-2000 and Pregnant Men: An International Exploration of Trans Male Experiences and Practices of Reproduction, to give you an idea of their merits.

The UKRI has nine research councils in total, some more serious than others. When you scan the UKRI website you may think that’s it in terms of taxpayer funding. But the UKRI then has even more offshoots from which funds pour.

One of these is titled The Future Leaders Fellowships scheme, the subject of my article today.

Not all FLF grants are dreadful, to add. For instance, last year the UKRI spent £120 million on research into the causes of lung cancer and Alzheimer’s disease through its FLF programme.

However, it’s another example of serious research being let down by the more trivial kind, as well as projects that don’t appear to have any relevance to the UK, as you will soon see. Without further ado:

Something I’ve noticed A LOT is foreign researchers being awarded UK taxpayer funding to study complete nonsense. Take the fact that one of the researchers behind the infamous study The Europe that Gay Porn Built, 1945-2000 is a Portuguese man who lives in Sweden.

It’s bad enough when UK researchers are given grants for woke research. Even worse when we are giving out funding left, right and centre so that foreigners can study gay pig masculinities (as the Portuguese researcher has had a taxpayer-funded grant for) or “THE PERIPHERALISATION OF ASYLUM ACCOMMODATION: MILITARY SITES, VESSELS, AND HOTELS IN ENGLAND”, the title of today’s example.

The £248,940 study, running from August 2025 to August 2027, is being undertaken by Dr Gaja Maestri, “a sociologist with an expertise on migration and ethnicity, collective action, and gender and intersectionality.” Because the UK economy is really crying out for this skillset…

Maestri has done rather well out of the UK taxpayer. According to her online profile, she been subsidised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) multiple times - including her latest project.

Tellingly, the abstract for her new study begins with a line about the “hostile environment”, immediately signalling what her political leanings are. Never mind that her “qualitative investigation” (they always are; wokies can’t do maths) involves “in-depth interviews with a variety of stakeholders, including 24 local authorities’ and charities’ representatives, and 70 migrants”.

Maestri will also be working with “migrant advocacy organisations”, such as the British Red Cross, and the Migrants Champions Network. So I’m sure we can expect some very detached, objective research. NOT.

If you can be bothered, have a read of the abstract here. The gist is that asylum seekers are being moved into harsher types of accommodation (which I don’t even know is true), that this is a bit mean, and it’s time to “address the evolving needs and rights of asylum seekers.”

What about UK citizens’ “evolving needs and rights” each week as there’s a new story about a random foreign man stabbing/ raping someone?

You certainly won’t get funding for studying this. Meanwhile our bills are going up so that Italian sociologists and their fellow fauxcademics can produce vague research on how hostile Britain is.

It is responsible for wasting colossal sums on the likes of The Europe that Gay Porn Built, 1945-2000, an £840k study that is still ongoing!

AHRC falls under the remit of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), a quango that was awarded £8,811 million by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology between 2025-26.

On the same day a poor man in Belfast was near-decapitated, with a Sudanese man charged with attempted murder, the taxpayer-funded City of Sanctuary Sheffield is advertising a “Far Right Resistance Workshop”.

Taking place on June 20, you can “Hear from people with lived experience of the UK border regime and discuss organising for migrant justice.”

The event is being put together by SADACCA (Sheffield and District African Caribbean Community Association), which lists Sheffield City Council, South Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner and The Parole Board as partners.

City of Sanctuary Sheffield is an an offshoot of City of Sanctuary UK. The former received £574,680 in taxpayer funding between 2021-25, mostly through grants from Sheffield City Council and is in my audit below (accounting for £663,116,359 in taxpayer funding):

Another event promoted by the charity (taking place today) is titled “Solidarity with Sudan Film”, an “evening of film, discussion, Sudanese food and music, featuring human rights activists, humanitarian organisations, and people with lived experience of migration from Sudan.”

The economy may be on its knees, but at least taxpayers are being charged £1,555,506 to “revolutionise the academic understanding and policy frameworks surrounding LGBTIQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, and questioning) asylum”, ey?!

Yes, this is an actual study funded by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) through its Future Leaders Fellowships (FLF) scheme.

While not the worst UKRI creation (which is undoubtedly the Arts and Humanities Research Council), the FLF is responsible for some real horrors, such as Decolonising Justice: Vernacular Justice Cultures Beyond the Liberal Order (which was awarded £1,164,119 and is currently underway).

I can’t say I’m all that tempted by the Southbank Centre’s upcoming show, Farm Fatale, which is about five scarecrows “who have lost their original jobs thanks to climate change” and “come together in a commune”.

I don’t think taxpayers will be very happy when they see its activities - never mind the hundreds of millions they are already being charged for de facto open-border charities:

For instance, Refugee Action provides “activist packs” to give people “everything [they] need to become an advocate for refugee rights - from information about our ongoing campaigns, to practical guidelines on how to mobilise and take action.”

Activists are encouraged to influence their MP, “organise a letter writing event” and make their “community a place of sanctuary” - by working with open-border charity City of Sanctuary UK:

Throughout March, Refugee Action is also encouraging people to “March for Refugees” to help “drown out the voices of hate.”
