The expansion of the university sector to cater not just for the top 5% - by definition those of an ability to engage with serious and hard intellectual pursuit - but to 50%, ie by definition down to the person of average intelligence who has no such attributes, is the root cause of all of this. By introducing hundreds of thousands of students into ‘universities’ who have neither the capability or interest to undertake traditional university level study, the universities have been forced to create more and more ever softer courses to cater for this cohort. And that of course has required an enormous influx of people who would never once have belonged in academia to design and teach these courses. Tragically, once sound polytechnics which taught valuable practical further education courses were converted to universities to cater for this goal.
The descent into pseudo intellectual trash was both inevitable and predictable. It is no surprise that the ever opportunistic far left took the opportunity to colonise this expansion to further their ambition to transform society.
In a free market none of this could happen. It has been made possible by the loan system which has sucked in millions of students, backed by a taxpayer guarantee to make good loans that can never be repaid with the financial fruits of a useless ‘degree’ course and fees artificially capped by the government. We should let the free market sort it out by removing the taxpayer support and leaving the universities to pick up the balance of irrecoverable debt. The crap courses would wither naturally and the worst universities would go out of business.
