āOverall, there should be a proportion of money allocated to Britainās finest cultural institutions: The Royal Opera House, The Globe, The National Gallery and so forth.ā
Hmmm. The definitional problem of āfinest cultural institutionā is not to be underestimated; expect many bunfights at the margin of inclusion versus exclusion. And what is the reason why such institutions are deemed to be a public good which must exist on taxpayer money? Why canāt they all be told to sink or swim in the market place based on their ability to attract memberships, ticket sales and sponsorship?
Personally I would close down the Ministry of Culture, Media & Sport (under which ACE lives) altogether; I canāt accept that any of these activities are taxpayer matters.
Agreed Paul. Why a bus driver in Bolton subsidises Opera for the elites is utterly beyond me. The museums and galleries are another matter, but of course, they have their own problems. I was visiting the National Gallery last week. So many wonderful, jaw dropping pieces. But the number of short descriptions of beautiful painting which went out of their way to link their subjects to slavery was especially galling.
