BBC Talent: Meet the writers who tackle "Queerness", "intergenerational trauma" and "post-Brexit radicalisation"

This week the BBC released details of âbrilliant writersâ from its 2025 âVoicesâ development scheme, who were given six months training âto elevate their craft and connect them with the industry.â
The BBC describes these souls as âtalented, passionate, funny, and endlessly creativeâ. But you also get the sense that they ticked quite a few boxes.
Kate Phillips, the BBCâs Chief Content Officer, has âpledged to hardwire diversity into everything [the BBC does]â, and you can tell this from its numerous writing schemes.
The BBC has spent a minimum of ÂŁ80 million per year âon diverse content that meets our creative diversityâ.
So what does this look like in practice?
In this article I will show you examples of writers who are clearly considered âdiverseâ/ âunderrepresentedâ talent, or have written dramas deemed worthy (eg a show about climate change or menâs mental health). Itâs also worth mentioning that the BBC seems to think being Northern is a disability (with bonus points if youâre âworking classâ or have written a âgrittyâ drama).
